My youngest is totally hooked on this comic called Omu-rice Jam Jam.
He’s read it a million times...
And every time he sees something tasty, he’s like:
"Can we make this?" or "Can we go try this place?"
With winter break wrapping up,
his dad cleared his schedule and asked,
"So, what’s the plan for tomorrow?"
My oldest wants to hit up a Jjimjilbang, veg out all day with his martial arts novels, and soak up the heat.
But the little one? He’s dead set on going to Myeongdong Tonkatsu from Volume 1 of his favorite comic.
So, the itinerary is set:
Tonkatsu first, Jjimjilbang second.

It’s been ages since I last visited Myeongdong Tonkatsu.
This place actually opened the same year my husband was born, making them the same age!
We used to come here back in our 20s. Back then, the menu was simple—just tonkatsu and shredded cabbage—but everything tasted amazing in our 20s, and I remember loving every bite.
I think it’s been almost 20 years since my last visit. lol.
Now, there are online reviews which didn’t exist back then... and honestly, the rating was pretty dismal.
A 2.8 out of 5 with 322 reviews? Many people were saying, "It’s not what it used to be" or "It’s really gone downhill."
But hey, everyone’s taste is different, right? I decided to judge for myself!
We arrived for lunch on a weekday and were seated on the second floor right away without a wait.
It was so heartwarming to see the elderly ladies serving there—it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside even before the food arrived. ^^
The highlight for my younger son was the pre-sliced tonkatsu and that specific combo of Worcestershire sauce and mustard.
Seeing this little guy dipping his pork cutlet into the mustard and going, "Mmm~ this is it!" was just the cutest and most precious thing ever.
The whole family enjoyed the meal, and my son gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. ^^
Seeing him so happy and eating so well made it all worth it. That’s all that matters!

환기 좀 하세요 =_=;;
After lunch, we headed over to the Jjimjilbang.
The logistics were a bit of a mess, but we decided on Geon-young Spa Valley in Nowon since it’s close to home. It’s a place we visit occasionally, famous for being a sauna where you can actually grill pork belly (Samgyeopsal) right inside!
But... oh boy...
As soon as we stepped in, the smell of heavy grease and raw pork hit me so hard it made me feel nauseous.
Seriously, guys, ventilate the place! =_=;;
But since we were already there, we had to stick it out.
And wouldn’t you know it? After sitting there for a while, I actually got used to the smell.
The kids, on the other hand, were busy living their best lives.
They spent 40,000 won just on snacks while running back and forth, and another 40,000 won on karaoke and claw machines.
They managed to drop 80,000 won on pure entertainment at a sauna—and that’s without even having a proper meal! lol.
We wrapped up the day playing Blue Marble (Board game) for three hours straight.
It was such a blast.

We originally planned to have Chimaek (chicken and beer) at the sauna...
But honestly, I wasn't really feeling fried chicken.
When I suggested we eat something else, my husband came up with a better idea: "How about Gamja-tang (Pork Back Bone Soup)?"
I was like, "That’s a brilliant idea!"
We ended up at Ibadom Gamja-tang, ordered a large pot, and finished it off with two servings of fried rice.
It was definitely the right call!
What a fantastic day it was!
